CB Girona

Club Bàsquet Girona is a Spanish basketball club from Girona in Catalonia . They played in the ACB league from 1987/88 to 2007/08 .

history

The basketball club was founded in 1962 as Club Bàsquet Sant Josep . In 1987 the team rose to the top Spanish league after it was increased to 24 teams. In 1991 they had to buy up the rights to remain in the league from CB Granollers.

The club has been playing in Palau Girona-Fontajau since 1993, which has a spectator capacity of 5,050.

Girona took part in the Korać Cup three times in the club's history (1989/90, 1999/2000 and 2000/01). In the 2007/08 season Akasvayu Girona made his ULEB Cup debut after the team won the FIBA EuroCup in 2007 , and promptly made it to the Cup final, which was lost 54:79 to DKV Joventut Badalona .

In July 2008, the club announced that it would not be able to participate in the Eurocup (previously ULEB Cup) or the Spanish league in the 2008/09 season. The reason given was that the club could not meet the economic standards due to critical financial circumstances in order to participate in the competitions. Even though you are not competitive at the highest level, the club will still exist and will initially focus on youth competitions.

  • 1998–1999: Girona Gavis (no sponsor)
  • 1999–2005: Casademont Girona (sponsor: Casademont)
  • 2005–2008: Akasvayu Girona (Sponsor: Akasvayu)
