The ACB league is the highest Spanish basketball league , sporting and economically one of the strongest in Europe . The Spanish league was founded in 1956 under the name Liga Española de Baloncesto , but it was 1983 when the current league association, Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (ACB), came into being. The championship is currently formed by 18 teams . Since 2011 the league officially bears the sponsor name "Liga Endesa " .

regulate

The ACB league is played in two phases. The first is a round-robin tournament in which each team plays a return match against all other participants. No points are awarded, the higher number of wins is decisive for the ranking in the table. If two or more teams have the same number of games won at the end of the regular season, the direct duels, the basket ratio or the higher number of points scored decide (in this order).

At the end of the round-robin tournament, the eight best teams qualify for the play-off . The first placed against the eighth, the second against the seventh, etc. The quarter-finals are played in the " best-of-three " mode, the semifinals and the final in the "best-of-five" mode. The winner of the final series is Spanish champions.

Squad Restrictions

The squad of the teams consists of eleven or twelve players. Four of them must have been trained in a club of the Spanish Association. It is essential that the player in question is a citizen of Spain, an EU country or a country with which there is no discrimination (e.g. Cotonou Agreement ), as well as at least three in a Spanish club between the ages of 14 and 20 has played.

In addition, only two members of the management team are allowed to be citizens of a country outside of FIBA Europe .
