The Bilbao Arena or Palacio de Deportes de Bilbao ( German  Sports Palace of Bilbao ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Miribilla district in the Spanish city ​​of Bilbao , Basque Country . Colloquially it is also known as Miribilla . history

After the laying of the foundation stone on September 4, 2007, after almost exactly three years, the arena was opened on September 24, 2010 in the presence of Mayor Iñaki Azkuna and the President of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, José Luis Bilbao . The initially estimated construction costs of 35 million euros rose to 38 million euros in the end due to delays. It offers a maximum of 10,014 seats in the stands. The roof is supported by thin pillars. The upper part of the facade consists of steel sheets painted in different colors in the form of rhombuses , which represent leaves . They are laid out like scales . The pillars create the impression of trees in a forest . The color choice on the outside continues with the plastic seats in the arena. In addition to sports, various shows take place in the event rena. The building has u. a. over a 25-meter swimming pool with six lanes as well as a children's pool, a fitness studio with 520 and office space.

Events

The FIBA U-20 European Basketball Championship 2011 was held in the Bilbao Arena. The hosts Spain won the final against the team from Italy 82:70. In 2016, the Badminton Junior World Championship was held . In addition to sports, concerts are also held in the arena.

The facility was chosen and awarded as Sports Building of the Year 2011 in a poll organized by the weblog ArchDaily.
