Club Deportivo Basket Bilbao Berri , better known as Bilbao Basket , is a Spanish basketball club from the Basque city of Bilbao . The first team played in the Spanish ACB league from 2004 to 2014 . The home games are played in the Bilbao Arena , which can hold around 10,000 spectators .
history
The Club Basket Bilbao Berri was founded on March 7, 2000 and started in the LEB-2 , at that time the third division of Spanish basketball. After relegation was barely prevented in the first season, promotion to LEB was successful in the following year . Part of the squad at that time was the young Tiago Splitter, who was on loan from local rivals TAU Cerámica . In the second division, too, they were promoted to the ACB league in the 2003/04 season . In the first division in 2007/08 with sixth place in the regular season, the qualification for the play-offs for the championship succeeded for the first time , but the Basques already failed in the quarter-finals at FC Barcelona . In the 2008/09 season, Bilbao Basket again reached the quarter-finals in the domestic championship and also ended their first participation in an international competition with the semi-finals in the Eurocup , where they failed with 73:79 to BK Chimki .
After another semifinal participation in the Eurocup 2009/10 , the breakthrough followed in the play-off for the national championship 2010/11. Bilbao surprisingly prevailed against PE Valencia and Real Madrid and only failed in the final at FC Barcelona. The Basques were also able to continue their highs in the ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 . In the preliminary round they left several local rivals behind with Caja Laboral and in the intermediate round with Real Madrid and Unicaja Málaga and were only eliminated in the quarter-finals against CSKA Moscow .
Bilbao reached the final of the ULEB Eurocup in the 2012/13 season , which they lost against Lokomotiv Kuban 64:75.
Due to ongoing financial difficulties, the club lost its right to appear in the ACB league in July 2014 . However, CB Bilbao Berri successfully took legal action against this decision and obtained the resumption of the Spanish championship in August this year.
