Iñaki Azkuna Urreta ( February 14, 1943 in Durango , Spain - March 20, 2014 in Bilbao , Spain) was a Spanish politician with the Basque Nationalist Party and Mayor of Bilbao.

biography

Iñaki Azkuna studied medicine in Salamanca, specializing in radiology and cardiology . After receiving his doctorate, he worked at the University of Paris Hospital . There he met Anabella Dominguez, a Mexican student in French philology who would later become his wife.

From 1973 he was a professor at the University of the Basque Country of physical medicine and radiology and worked at the Hospital las Cruces ( Baracaldo ), where he headed radiology from 1976. In 1981 he became director of the hospital.

His political career began in the Basque Ministry of Health. In 1999 he was elected mayor of Bilbao and remained in that position until his death. During his time as mayor , Bilbao transformed from an industrial city into a cultural metropolis. For this he received the World Mayor Prize in 2012 .

He died on March 20, 2014 of complications from prostate cancer .
