The Fernando Buesa Arena (until 2000: Pabellón Araba ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Spanish city of Vitoria-Gasteiz , Autonomous Community of the Basque Country . After expansion between 2011 and 2012, the arena can hold 15,504 visitors for the games of the Caja Laboral basketball club .
history
Originally established in 1975 as a cattle market; it was converted into an event hall and opened in 1991. Until 2000 the hall was named Pabellón Araba ; then it was named after the politician Fernando Buesa . He was killed by a car bomb on February 22nd, 2000 by the Basque underground organization ETA . There are 2,500 parking spaces for cars and 40 buses around the arena. The events held in the hall include a. the final in the FIBA European Cup 1995/96 , the Final Four tournament in the ULEB Eurocup 2009/10 and the Final Eight tournaments of the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto 2000, 2002, 2008, 2013 and 2017.
The arena was expanded within a year. To do this, the dome roof was removed ; a fourth tier was added, increasing the capacity to around 15,000 seats. Construction work began in March 2011. The costs were estimated at around € 25 million . The reopening of the expanded arena took place in early April 2012. In the first game on April 9th, the home team Caja Laboral beat Real Madrid in front of 15,504 spectators 67:66. With a crowd of 15,504 visitors, a new record would be set for the Spanish ACB league .
In mid-May 2018, the ULEB announced that the hall in 2019 will be the venue for the Final Four of the EuroLeague 2018/19 .
