The Basketbol Süper Ligi (BSL), officially Tahincioğlu Basketbol Süper Ligi , is the top division of professional Turkish basketball . The Turkish men's basketball championship has been played in the Turkish basketball league since 1966 .
history
The first basketball game in Turkey was played at Robert College in Istanbul in 1904. The Galatasaray High School founded the first basketball team in the country in 1911th The main person responsible for this was the sports teacher (and graduate of the school) Ahmet Robinson, who wanted to teach his students a sport that was still unknown to them. He was also instrumental in the sport's soaring popularity in Turkey. Another basketball team was formed in 1913 by arch-rivals Fenerbahçe .
The first unofficial basketball league was founded in Istanbul in 1927 and the basketball championships were held from 1946 between teams from Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir .
The official Turkish basketball league was founded on December 13, 1966 by the Turkish Basketball Federation . The electronics manufacturer Beko became the namesake and main sponsor from the 2006 season . The name sponsor has been Spor Toto since the 2015/16 season .
Game mode
- Regular season: 16 teams play against each other twice in the league system (one home game, one away game) and this results in the eight qualified teams for the subsequent play-off .
- Play-off quarter-finals: The teams drawn up play two games against each other. If it comes to a 1: 1, both teams play a third game. The team with the better placement would then have home rights.
- Play-off semi-finals: The season's finalists are determined in two best-of-fives .
- Play-off finals: The master of the playing time is the team that can achieve three victories (in a maximum of five games) against the opponent.
The last two teams in the regular season are relegated.
