ULEB Euroleague

The Eurocup (2002 to 2008 ULEB Cup ), officially 7DAYS EuroCup for sponsorship reasons , is a competition for European men's basketball club teams held under the umbrella of the ULEB . As part of the annual European basketball cup, it is the second most important of all competitions after the ULEB Euroleague and before the FIBA Europe Cup .

history

Trophy of the Eurocup (left) and the ULEB Cup until 2008 (right)

Once in 2002 by the FIBA discharged European Cup competitions, the Korać Cup and Saporta Cup , have been set, which founded the ULEB for the 2002/03 season the ULEB Cup , which henceforth was the second most important European Cup in basketball and is to this day.

The first club to secure the trophy was the Spanish representative Pamesa Valencia . The game mode and the number of participants have changed continuously over the years. In the 2007/08 season, the ULEB increased the number of participating clubs to 54, which led to major disagreements with FIBA, which then discontinued their EuroCup Challenge .

In 2008 the competition was renamed Eurocup and permanently limited to 32 teams, as the performance gap in the tournament was too great before the ULEB decided to host the tournament with 48 clubs from the 2013/14 season.

The record winner is the Valencia Basket Club , which has won the Eurocup four times. The competition has only been won five times by teams that do not represent Russia or Spain , including two-time title holder Lietuvos rytas Vilnius . With ALBA Berlin , a German team has so far reached the final.

meaning

Since its inception, the Eurocup has been the second most important European basketball cup behind the Euroleague and before the EuroChallenge , and since 2015 the FIBA Europe Cup . Since the 2016/17 season, the Eurocup and the Basketball Champions League have been fighting over which is the more important competition.

Although many renowned teams from the most important European leagues as well as former long-time EuroLeague participants are represented in the EuroCup, not a single national champion takes part, while 16 champions are in the Champions League. One factor that speaks for the Basketball Champions League and against the EuroCup is the variety of countries from which the participating clubs come. While clubs from only nine nations take part in the EuroCup, there are 31 nations in the Champions League. This in turn means a higher performance density in the EuroCup.

Current game mode

The Eurocup will be played in the 2018/19 season as follows:

1st group stage
24 teams, divided into four groups of six teams each, compete against each other in home and away games until each team has played ten games. The first, second, third and fourth placed from each group qualify for the next round.
2nd group stage
The 16 qualifiers from the first group stage take part in this group stage. These 16 teams, divided into four groups of four teams each, compete against each other in home and away games until each team has played six games. The first and second placed from each group qualify for the next round.
Quarter finals
The four group winners meet the four runners-up and determine the semi-finalists in the " Best of Three " mode .
Semifinals
The four remaining teams contest the two semi-finals with the same rules as in the quarter-finals.
final
The two remaining teams use the same rules from the previous rounds to determine the winner of the Eurocup.

Historical game modes

Like the number and composition of participants, the game mode has changed continuously throughout the history of the competition.

In the first season, the group stage was played in four groups of six teams, four of which qualified for the next round, those in the eighth, quarter and semi-finals as well as the final in the knockout system in the first and second leg (Home / away game) were played. In the 2003/04 season, the mode was largely retained. Only the final was held centrally in Charleroi , where it also took place for the following three years.

Major changes were made to the group stage in the 2007/08 Eurocup season. This was held in nine groups of six teams each, with the top three in each group and the top five group fourth qualifying for the newly introduced sixteenth-finals, followed by the round of 16. The eight winners of the round of 16 qualified for a Final Eight tournament in Turin , in which the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final were played in simple knockout games within four days. The following year the number of participants was reduced again. Eight groups of four teams played, the two best teams of which qualified for the round of 16. The winners from this again played the winner in the Final Eight in Turin.

Between the 2009/10 season and the 2012/13 season, 32 teams played constantly in the EuroCup, which, apart from 2012/13 (one final game), ended with a Final Four . While the competition was increased to 48 teams in the 2013/14 season, the number fell again to 36 in 2014/15.
