Matthew Peter Nielsen , short Matt Nielsen , (born February 3, 1978 in Penrith , Sydney ) is a former Australian basketball player. The 2.09 m tall power forward was most recently under contract with BK Chimki and was also a long-time member of the Australian national team , with which he took part in the 2004 , 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games .

Career

From 1996 to 2004 Nielsen was active in the National Basketball League for the Sydney Kings , in 2003 and 2004 he won the championship with the Kings. He then moved to Europe, where he has been active ever since. After a year at PAOK Thessaloniki , Nielsen was signed by Lietuvos rytas Vilnius . With this club he won the Baltic Basketball League twice and reached the final of the ULEB Cup in 2007 . At the end of 2008, the club ran into financial difficulties, whereupon Nielsen signed with the Spanish club Valencia Basket Club in November of that year . In 2010 he won the Eurocup with Valencia and was named MVP of the Final Four . Shortly afterwards Nielsen moved to Greece to Olympiacos Piraeus . Since 2011 Nielsen has been under contract for the Russian BK Chimki . With this club he won the VTB United League in 2011 and the Eurocup for the second time in 2012 . Nielsen ended his career in 2013 and returned to Australia, where he has been working as an assistant coach since 2015.
