In 1939 Khimki received city rights. Today, among other things, are there rocket engines for the Buran and - Soyuz - spacecraft made.

In the 1930s there was a main department of the NKVD in Khimki , in which parts of the Great Terror were prepared under Yezhov .

During the Russian campaign in World War II , a reconnaissance troop of the Wehrmacht succeeded on December 2, 1941 in an advance to Khimki, which at that time was about 8 km from the Moscow city limits. It was the furthest German advance on the Soviet capital in the Battle of Moscow ( Jeschi memorial since 1976 ); the Moscow fortress batteries now shot into the front lines of the attackers.

In 2008 the mayor Streltschenko , who had since resigned, was criticized for wanting to use a forest near Khimki as lucrative building land. In particular, the editor-in-chief of Chimkinskaya pravda , Mikhail Beketov , reported repeatedly on the illegal marketing of forest properties. After he had been threatened several times, strangers attacked Beketov in mid-November 2008 and injured him so badly that the journalist has been severely disabled since then. In the summer of 2010, the planned relocation of a new motorway from Moscow via Sheremetyevo Airport to Saint Petersburg through this forest area caused criticism throughout Russia; meanwhile the clearing work has been stopped until further notice due to public pressure. Mayor Strelchenko resigned on August 14, 2012. On October 14, 2012, the new mayor Oleg Fjodorowitsch Schachow ( United Russia ) was elected to office with 47.61% of the votes cast. Opposition candidate Yevgenia Tschirikowa , one of the main protagonists in the protest against the deforestation, won 17.59% of the vote.

Trolleybuses have been operating in Khimki since 1997 and also provide a connection to Moscow.

In recent years there has been a public discussion in Khimki about whether the city of Khimki should be incorporated into Moscow. The former governor of Moscow Oblast, Boris Gromov , was a categorical opponent of the incorporation.
