history

View over the city

The first localities on the site of today's city were mentioned in a document from 1401. Since the area was already conveniently located on a road from Moscow to Kaschira at that time, it was a popular place to live. Remains of former estates that have survived to this day still remind of the former prosperity of the villages. In addition to agriculture, the production of white stone also played an important role here, from which, among other things, magnificent buildings were built in the “white stone city” of Moscow.

On January 19, 1900, the first section of the railway line from Moscow via Kashira to Lipetsk was put into operation. This important thoroughfare led past today's Domodedovo. This accelerated the development of industry near the newly created train station. A textile factory as well as several brick and lime works were already in operation in this area at the beginning of the 20th century.

On April 16, 1930, a serious railway accident occurred near Domodedovo : alcohol spilled in a passenger car was accidentally set on fire. In the fire that followed, 45 people died and 23 were injured.

Over the next few decades, the station settlement developed into a workers' settlement. This received city rights on March 12, 1947. From 1969 to 2006 the city of Domodedovo was the administrative center of the raion of the same name . The latter was dissolved in 2006 and declared a district-free city of Domodedovo . At the same time, the workers' settlement Wostrjakowo and the two settlements Barybino and Belyje Stolby were incorporated into Domodedowo.

Economy and Infrastructure

Belyje Stolby railway station

The main operation of the city is the international airport Moscow-Domodedovo , which with 28.2 million passengers annually (as of 2012) is the largest Russian airport. The industry is represented in the city with an engineering company, a textile factory, a building materials factory and a brick factory. The state film archive Gosfilmofond is also located in the incorporated settlement of Belyje Stolby .

Domodedovo is on the Russian M4 trunk road from Moscow to Novorossiysk and on the Moscow – Kaschira – Pavelets railway line. In the city area there are several train stations and stops on this route, but also on a branch line to the airport, which connect Domodedovo with, among other things, the Paveletsky train station in Moscow.
