Stupino ( Russian Ступино ) is a city with 66,816 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and the center of the raion of the same name in Russia in the southern Moscow Oblast .
location
Stupino is located around 88 km south of Moscow , not far from the left bank of the Oka . The M 4 trunk road and the Moscow Paveletskaya - Lipetsk railway line run close to the city . The nearest town is Kaschira about 10 km south of Stupino on the opposite bank of the Oka.
history
The first mention of the village of Stupinski comes from the year 1507, but the Orthodox Trinity Monastery on White Sands (Russian: Троицкий Белопесоцкий монастырь ) still existed in the area of today's city in the 15th century .
The present-day town of Stupino was first built in the 1930s as a workers' settlement for the local railway workshops. In 1938 it received city rights. In 2004 the urban settlement of Prioksk was incorporated into Stupino.

economy
One of the city's main operations is the SMK Metallurgy Combine, which was founded in 1940 and focused heavily on arms production during the Cold War . Today it specializes primarily in the manufacture of alloys for industrial use.
Since 1995 there has been a confectionery factory of Mars Incorporated in Stupino and since 1998 a dairy factory of Campina GmbH & Co. KG . There are also companies in the city in the field of mechanical engineering, building materials and ceramics.
Sports
The Kapitan Stupino ice hockey club plays in the second highest Russian league .
