Kotelniki ( Russian Коте́льники ) has been a city (previously urban-type settlement ) in Moscow Oblast , Russia , 20 km southeast of central Moscow and 4 km from Moscow's city limits since 2004 . history

The first mentions of Kotelniki come from the early 17th century. The name could be derived from the Russian word Kotjol , in English "pot", which also explains the depiction of the three pots on the city's coat of arms.

In 1651 the place came into the possession of the boyar Boris Ivanovich Morozov , who was influential at the court of the tsars . In the course of the next few years he had the place expanded and people settled there. After Morosov's death and the banishment of his heirs, Kotelniki came to the state in 1676. A short time later, a cathedral was built there, which was named after the much venerated Our Lady of Kazan . This sacred building, completed around 1680, has been preserved in Kotelniki to this day.

After the war against Napoleon in 1812 , Prince Sergei Michailowitsch Golitsyn bought Kotelniki, which was partially devastated by the French, and had the destroyed cathedral rebuilt at great expense. The place remained in the possession of the Golitsyn family until the October Revolution .

In 1931 a brick factory was built in the village to process the sand extracted from the area. In 1938 the place received the status of a workers' settlement, later an urban settlement in Lyubertsy district . In June 2004, Kotelniki became a city that has been directly subordinate to the Oblast since 2007.

economy

Former Marktkauf branch in Kotelniki

Due to the proximity of Moscow, its own industrial plants only play a relatively minor role in the economy of Kotelniki. The town has a carpet factory, a building materials factory and a large farm that grew out of a former sovkhoz . An important economic factor is the retail trade, which is developing well in Kotelniki, as in other places near the Moscow city limits, due to the lower land prices compared to Moscow. There is a MEGA mall near the city, including an Ikea furniture store, and Russia's first Marktkauf store opened in Kotelniki , which was sold to the Metro Group in 2006 and is now operated as a Real hypermarket.
