Dmitrov was founded in 1154 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruki in the forests where his son Vsevolod was born as a fortress on the important trade route on the Upper Volga. The name is derived from St. Demetrios , the patron saint of Vsevolod. Since its inception, Dmitrov has been at the crossroads of important traffic routes that connected it with Moscow, Sergiev Posad , Klin , Uglich , Pereslavl-Zalessky and Rostov Veliky . In the 13th century the place became the capital of a duchy . From then on, the small principality of Dmitrov was at the center of the power struggle between the powerful principalities of Moscow and Tver . During the meeting of the Princes of Dmitrov, Moscow and Tver in 1301, the disputes could not be resolved. In the middle of the 14th century, Ivan Danilovich bought the right to rule over Dmitrov from the Mongols and incorporated the city into the Moscow principality. However, there was a separate line of princes until 1569. In the years 1238, 1253, 1293, 1317, 1382 and 1408 Dmitrov was devastated by the Golden Horde and in 1372 by Lithuanian troops under Prince Algirdas .

The city gained economic importance from the second half of the 15th to the end of the 16th century. Thanks to its favorable location in the river system around Moscow, Dmitrov developed into an important trading center and one of the largest cities of the Moscow Empire, but suffered during the time of turmoil . After the founding of St. Petersburg in 1703, Dmitrov experienced a further boom, because the city was a junction on the waterway between Moscow and St. Petersburg. On the instructions of Catherine II , Dmitrov was appointed diocese in 1788. During the Russian campaign in 1812 , Dmitrov was besieged by French troops.

Dmitrov has been an industrial center since the end of the 18th century, and the city was particularly characterized by mechanical engineering and the textile industry. With the relocation of the railway from Moscow to Kimry at the beginning of the 20th century, Dmitrov's importance increased. During the Second World War , the German Wehrmacht carried out bombing raids on the railway lines around Dmitrov.
