history
Kimry was first mentioned in 1547 as a fishing and craft village. The place name (until the 20th century Kimra instead of Kimry ) is a hydronym of the river of the same name, which may have come from the Finno-Ugric languages and flows into the Volga here.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Kimry alternately belonged to several aristocratic families close to the Tsar's court . It was not until the middle of the 19th century that the town became state property. In the 18th century, the shoe trade began to develop in Kimry, which expanded so far by the beginning of the 20th century that a shoe factory was established in the village in 1907. Later, in Soviet times , this was called the “Red Star” and among other things manufactured army boots.
The importance of the shoe trade for the city can also be seen on the city coat of arms of Kimry: There you can see a Russian ship floating on the Volga, which in the picture is stylized as a series of pairs of shoes.
In 1917 Kimry received city rights and in 1929 became the capital of the newly formed Kimry Rajon , which initially belonged to Moscow Oblast and then from 1935 to Tver Oblast.

Economy and Transport
In addition to the shoe industry, which is still active today, there are textile factories, wood processing and mechanical engineering in Kimry. Due to the attractive landscape, tourism is also becoming increasingly important.
Kimry has with the station Sawjolowo , inter alia, with the Moscow Savyolovsky station , a railway terminal is directly connected. However, this is not in the city center, but in the Savjolowo district on the opposite (right) bank of the Volga. The two halves of the city are connected by a bridge over the Volga.
