Stariza ( Russian Старица ) is a small town in Tver Oblast ( Russia ) with 8607 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Valdai heights about 75 kilometers southwest of the oblast capital Tver at the confluence of the Stariza river of the same name into the Volga .

Stariza is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

Its station is twelve kilometers from the city on the Lichoslavl - Torzhok - Rzhev - Vyazma railway line, which was opened on this section in 1878 (route km 93).

history

The place was founded in 1297 as the fortress Nowy Gorod (Russian for New City , also known as Gorodok na Starize / Small town on the Stariza or Vysoki Gorodok / High town ).

Towards the end of the 14th century the name Stariza became common. 1485 came the place with the Principality of Tver to the Grand Duchy of Moscow .

In 1775 the town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds). In the 18th and 19th centuries Staritsa was an important landing stage on the waterway between the Volga or Moscow and Saint Petersburg .

During the Second World War , Stariza was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on October 12, 1941 and was recaptured on January 1, 1942 by troops of the Kalinin Front of the Red Army as part of the Kalinin Operation .

Culture and sights

Assumption Monastery

Stariza is one of the best preserved small towns in the western part of Russia. Here, the complex was founded in the 12th century is Assumption Monastery ( Успенский монастырь / Uspenski monastyr) with the Assumption Church ( Успенская церковь / Uspenskaja Zerkow) of 1530, the Holy Trinity Cathedral ( Троицкий собор / Troitsky Sobor) the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary ( Введенская церковь / Vwedenskaja zerkow) from 1570 and the Apostle John Church ( церковь Иоанна Богослова / zerkow Ioanna Bogoslowa) from 1594 and the monks' cells. In addition, in the city that are Paraskeva Friday Church ( церковь Параскевы Пятницы / Zerkow Paraskewy Pjatnizy) of 1750, the Boris and Gleb Cathedral ( Борисоглебский собор / borisoglebsky Sobor) 1808-1820, the Church of the Redeemer ( Спасская церковь / Spasskaya Zerkow) with bell tower from 1827 and others have been preserved.

The city has a local museum.

In the vicinity of the city are the former aristocratic seats of Pavlovsk , Malinniki and Bernowo . In the latter, which belonged to the Wulfow family , a Pushkin Museum was set up.
