geography
The city is located in the foothills of the Waldai heights about 280 kilometers west of the oblast capital Tver on the upper reaches of the Daugava .

The city is located on the Bologoje - Velikije Luki (- Belarusian border) railway line, which opened in 1907, at route kilometer 190.
history
Since the 17th century, the village of Matschichino on the left bank of the Daugava River and since 1489 the village of Dubna on the right bank of the Daugava was known in place of the current city .
Matschichino was renamed Andrejano Pole (roughly means Andreis field ) in 1783 . The name form changed several times over Andrejewo Pole , Andrejapol (1859) and Andriapol . In contrast to Sevastopol and other cities on the Black Sea coast (today Ukraine ), the -pol in the place name is not of Greek origin.
In 1907 the railway station with its current name was finally built. The station settlement grew together with the old village, and in 1928 the neighboring village of Dubna was incorporated.
In 1967 city rights were granted.
