Bely ( Russian Бе́лый ) is a small town in Tver Oblast ( Russia ) with 3772 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The town lies on the western edge of the heights of Bely about 300 kilometers west of the Oblasthauptstadt Tver at the mouth of the Obsha River in the Mesha , a tributary of the Daugava .

Bely is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

The nearest train station is Nelidowo, 50 kilometers away on the Moscow - Riga route .

history

Bely was first mentioned in the 13th century as a town in the Principality of Smolensk . The Russian белый / bely means "white / bright" , but the word was probably used figuratively when naming the city.

Towards the end of the 14th century, the city was conquered by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . In 1503 it came back into the possession of the Grand Duchy of Moscow . In 1506 a large fortress was built, which in 1508 withstood a siege by Polish-Lithuanian troops.

From 1610 to 1613 during the Polish-Russian War 1609-1618 in Polish hands, the city was surrendered to Poland after the end of the war under the Treaty of Deulino . At the beginning of the Russo-Polish War 1654–1667 , however, Bely was finally conquered by Tsarist Russia .

In the second half of the 19th century was Bely center of the timber floating on the rivers Obsha River, Mesha and Daugava.

The city has a local museum.

There is a History and Revolution Museum in the village of Nesterowo .
