Peno ( Russian Пе́но ) is an urban-type settlement in Tver Oblast in Russia with 4220 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 200 km as the crow flies west of the Tver Oblast Administrative Center . It is located between the Peno and Volgo lakes on the upper reaches of the Volga , which since 1845 have been united with other lakes by a weir northwest of Selischarowo to form the Upper Volgastausee (Verkhnevolschskoje wodochranilishche) .

Peno is the administrative center of the Rajons Penowski and seat and only town of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Possjolok Peno.

history

The place was created in 1906 in connection with the construction of the Bologoje  - Velikije Luki railway line , when a station was built there. In 1911 the entrepreneur Sawwa Morosow had a woodworking factory built nearby, around which a settlement also grew. The settlements gradually grew together, as did the nearby villages of Bubnowo, Iswedowo, Schwezowo, Sujewo and Tinizy.

On June 1, 1929, Peno became the administrative seat of a newly created Rajons named after him. In 1930 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement. During the Second World War , the settlement was occupied by the German Wehrmacht at the beginning of October 1941 , but was recaptured by the Red Army on January 11, 1942 during their counter-offensive in the Battle of Moscow .
