Solnetschny ( Russian Со́лнечный ) is a "closed" urban-type settlement in the Tver Oblast in Russia with 2242 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is about 175 km as the crow flies west-northwest of the Tver Oblast Administrative Center on Gorodomlja, the second largest island in Lake Seliger .
Solnetschny is its only village and forms a district of the same name .
history
The settlement in its current form dates back to a research station where the Red Army began developing biological weapons in the 1930s . After the Second World War , missile development began on the island. From May 22, 1947 to the early 1950s, German rocket scientists and technicians who had previously worked on the German Aggregat 4 project (V2) , including Helmut Gröttrup , Werner Albring and Heinrich Wilhelmi, also worked there . Gyroscopes for military and civil missiles were later made there . Today the production is under Roskosmos .
As a secret settlement, the place had the cover name Ostashkov-3. At the beginning of the 1990s, the complete secrecy was lifted, and the place got its current name, from Russian solnze for "sun", so roughly "sunny settlement". Since February 17, 1995, the place has the status of an urban-type settlement and a closed administrative-territorial structure (SATO), still with restricted access. As part of the municipal administrative reform, Solnetschny became an independent urban district on February 6, 2006.
