Krasny Cholm ( Russian Красный Холм ) is a small town in Tver Oblast ( Russia ) with 5608 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the Mologa lowlands about 175 kilometers northeast of the Oblast capital Tver on the rivers Neledina and Mogotscha in the river system of the Volga .
Krasny Cholm is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
The city is located on the railway line from Moscow - Zavyolovo - Sonkovo - Vessyegonsk (km 294), which was built between 1899 and 1926 .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1518 as the village of Spas na Cholmu ("Savior [church] on the hill"). Until 1764 the village was owned by the nearby Nikolaus-Antonius-Kloster . At the beginning of the 17th century the village and monastery were destroyed by Polish-Lithuanian troops.
In 1776 the place received city rights. Probably at the same time it was renamed Krasny Cholm ("red" or "beautiful hill").
In 1899, the railway line from Sonkowo reached the city, which made it a commercial center.

Culture and sights
The city has a local museum.
The churches of the nearby Nikolaus-Antonius-Kloster on the banks of the Mologa were destroyed or left to decay during the Soviet period.
