List of cities in Russia

Kashin ( Russian Ка́шин ) is a city in Russia in the Tver Oblast . It has 16,171 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located about 180 km north of Moscow and 150 km northeast of the regional capital Tver .

history

Kashin was first mentioned in a document as early as 1238, making it one of the oldest cities in the Tver region. The place was presumably occupied by the Tatars at that time , but more precise details are not known. The name Kashin comes from the river Kaschinka , the banks of which were inhabited by Finno-Ugric peoples before the Slavic settlement of this area .

In the 13th century, Kashin became part of the Suzdal principality , which became part of Moscow in 1485 . The location of the place not far from the Volga favored its economic development , despite several setbacks such as the devastation in 1609 by Polish-Lithuanian interventions. Not only did trade expand there, but also blacksmithing, pottery and icon painting.

In 1775 Kashin, which has since grown to include numerous stone merchant houses and churches, received town status. In the 19th century, the city's infrastructure was noticeably expanded, with a public library, a hospital and, in 1890, the railway that connected Kashin with Moscow via Kimry for the first time . At the same time, Kashin was given the status of a spa town due to its mineral water springs .

With the territorial reforms in the 1920s and 1930s, the city and Kashin Raion first belonged to Moscow Oblast , and from 1935 to Tver Oblast.

economy

Today Kashin is still considered a spa town and is known nationwide as a tourist destination. Industry plays only a minor role: there is only one electrical engineering factory, two textile companies and the food industry, including a bottling plant for the local mineral water.

Attractions

A relatively large number of historical buildings from past centuries have been preserved in Kashin. These include the remains of three former monasteries, as well as many church buildings: The Resurrection Cathedral (built in 1867) with a bell tower on which a viewing platform is set up, the Assumption Cathedral, and several smaller churches from the 18th century.
