Sonkowo ( Russian Сонко́во ) is an urban-type settlement in Tver Oblast in Russia with 4,164 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 125 km as the crow flies northeast of the Tver Oblast Administrative Center . It is located on the upper reaches of the Kamenka, a right tributary of the Sit , which flows into the Rybinsk reservoir of the Volga .

Sonkowo administrative center is the Rajons Sonkowski and seat and only town of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Possjolok Sonkowo.

history

The place was founded in 1870 in connection with the construction of the Rybinsk  - Bologoje  - Pskow railway line as a settlement near the Savelino railway station , named after the village of Savelikha a few kilometers away . The station and the settlement became more important from 1898 onwards, as the crossing (later extended in both directions) railway line Kashin  - Krasny Kholm was built . In 1903 they were renamed Sonkowo after a nearby location .

In 1924 Sonkowo became the administrative seat of a Volost des Ujesds Kashin, and in 1927 it received urban-type settlement status. In 1929 the Wolost was transformed into a Rajon of the same name.

Sonkowo has a station at which the Rybinsk - Bologoje - Pskow line, opened in 1870 (line km 105) and the Moscow  - Kimry line ( Savyolovo station ) - Pestowo (-  Saint Petersburg ; line km 261), opened on this section in 1898, cross.

Regional road 28K-0034 leads to the settlement from Vyshny Volotschok on the federal trunk road M10 via the neighboring district centers of Maksaticha and Beschezk to the west . In a northerly direction 28N-0822 runs to Krasny Cholm.
