Bernhard Bukiet

Bernhard Bukiet (born January 1919 in Poland ; † 1995 ) was one of the best German table tennis players until 1952 . He became German team champion and later three times American champion.

Bukiet was born in Poland in 1919. During World War II he was held in a Russian concentration camp. After his release he played table tennis in Germany. First he joined the club SC Fürstenfeldbruck . In 1948 he was defeated by Heinz Raack in a comparison match in Berlin . A year later he won the individual championship in Bavaria. He later moved to TSV Milbertshofen , with whom he was German team champion in 1951/52.

In 1952 he moved to the USA, in 1957 he took American citizenship. In 1958 he was led in the USA rankings in first place. In 1955 he returned to Germany. In Kiel he won the double competition at the International German Championships together with the American Erwin Klein . In 1960 he joined Eintracht Frankfurt as a player-coach.

In 1957, 1963 and 1966 he was American champion in singles. Between 1954 and 1973 he represented the USA at eight world championships. He came furthest in 1954 , when he was eliminated in the quarterfinals by a defeat against the eventual world champion Ichirō Ogimura (Japan).
