List of cities in Russia |
Pereswet ( Russian Пересве́т ) is a city with around 14,147 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in Russia in the Moscow Oblast . It belongs to Sergiev Posad Raion and is located a good 80 km northeast of Moscow .
history
Peresvet was created in 1948 as a new part of the city of Krasnosavodsk . Originally it was called Novostroika , literally something like "new building". The reason for the establishment of the site was the establishment of the NIIchimmasch research institute for mechanical engineering in the chemical industry. This institution shapes the place to this day and plays an important role in Russian space travel, especially in rocket construction.
Peresvet became an independent city in 2000 after it was spun off from Krasnosavodsk. It got its current name in memory of Alexander Peresvet , a monk of the nearby Trinity Monastery of Sergiev Posad , who, according to legend, was killed in a close combat battle on the Kulikowo Pole in 1380 .
Economy and Transport
The most important company in the city is still the Niichimmasch Research Institute , which employs a total of around 3,600 people.
Public transport connections to Moscow and other cities exist mainly via Sergiev Posad , 15 km away , which has both a connection to the M8 trunk road and a station on the Trans-Siberian Railway .
