Schachowskaja ( Russian Шаховска́я ) is an urban-type settlement and administrative center of the raion of the same name in Moscow Oblast , Russia. It is located around 150 km west of Moscow , near the border with the Tver and Smolensk Oblasts , and has 10,728 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). The nearest city is Volokolamsk 30 km east of Shakhovskaya.
history
The place was created in 1901 with the construction of the Moscow – Riga railway line as a station settlement . Schachowskaja was named after the princess Schachowskaja , who had owned the land near the place at that time. In 1929 Shakhovskaya became the administrative center of the newly formed Rajons. In 1930 the first machine-tractor station in the town was set up.
In the 1960s to 1970s, Shachowskaya was expanded considerably. In the process, several new districts were created, and later also a local museum.

Economy and Transport
The industry is represented in Shakhovskaya with a sawmill, a brick factory and a dairy. In 2003, a factory for incandescent lamps was built in the settlement with the participation of German investors, but production had to be stopped in 2006 due to low profitability.
The place is connected to the trunk road M9 and to the railway line Moscow – Riga with direct connections to Moscow to the Riga train station .
