Schcholkowo ( Russian Щёлково ) is a Russian city in Moscow Oblast . It is located on the river Klyazma 35 km north-east of Moscow , and has 110,411 inhabitants (14 October 2010).
history
Schcholkowo emerged from a village of the same name, which had been known since the 1520s and was formerly owned by the Sergiev Posad Trinity Monastery . Since the 18th century, the village has developed into an important handicraft center, mainly because of the silk weaving that was carried out there . The first textile factories opened in Shcholkovo in the mid-19th century. One of them was founded by the Prussian manufacturer Ludwig Rabeneck from Elberfeld (now in Wuppertal ) and still exists today under the name Kalinin- Cotton Combine Shcholkowo ( Щёлковский хлопчатобумажный комбинат Комбинат имени Ма . И.ини Ма .
In 1925, today's Shcholkowo was formed from the former village of Shcholkowo and some surrounding villages. At the same time, the place received city rights.

Economy and Infrastructure
The textile industry still plays an important role in Shcholkovo today, while other important branches of industry are the chemical industry and mechanical engineering .
Shcholkowo has a railway connection on a branch line of the Trans-Siberian Railway . There are regular train connections between Shcholkovo and the Yaroslavl train station in Moscow.
The Chkalovsky military airfield is located on the south-eastern outskirts of the city .

Shcholkowo has had a town partnership with Hemer since 1992 . Brovary in Ukraine is another twin city .
