Roman Jurjewitsch Romanenko ( Russian Роман Юрьевич Романенко ; born August 9, 1971 in Schcholkowo , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian cosmonaut . He was the commander of the Soyuz TMA-15 and Soyuz TMA-07M spacecraft and flight engineer on the International Space Station (ISS).

Studies and the military

Romanenko studied from 1986 to 1988 at the Suvorov Military College in Leningrad , then at the Chernihiv pilot school , which he left in 1992 as a pilot engineer. He then served in the Russian Air Force, where he flew Aero L-39 and Tupolev Tu-134 and can prove over 500 flight hours.

Cosmonaut activity

Romanenko was selected as a cosmonaut on July 28, 1997. He completed his basic training on December 1, 1999. From January 2000 he was trained for a stay on board the ISS. In February 2002 he was assigned to the replacement crew of the 9th ISS expedition , but after the accident of the space shuttle Columbia in February 2003 the crews were downsized and Romanenko lost this assignment again.

In May 2006 he was nominated as substitute for Oleg Kotow : Commander of Soyuz TMA-10 and flight engineer of ISS expedition 15 . The start took place in April 2007 without any problems, Romanenko was not used.

As of August 2007, Romanenko was scheduled to be in command of the Soyuz TMA-16 , which was scheduled to launch in November 2009. In November 2008 he was brought forward on a flight and was now the commander of Soyuz TMA-15 and flight engineer of ISS expeditions 20 and 21 .

The launch took place on May 27, 2009. Also on board were the Belgian Frank De Winne and the Canadian Robert Thirsk . With the docking of Soyuz TMA-15 with the ISS, ISS Expedition 20 began under Commander Gennadi Padalka . Also on board the ISS were the US American Michael Barratt and the Japanese Kōichi Wakata . On December 1, 2009, Romanenko landed back on earth.

Romanenko took off for his second space flight on December 19, 2012. As the commander of Soyuz TMA-07M , he flew to the ISS together with the Canadian Chris Hadfield and the American Tom Marshburn , where he spent six months as a flight engineer on ISS expeditions 34 and 35 is working. On April 19, 2013 Romanenko completed his first spacecraft mission together with his Russian colleague Pavel Vinogradov . They exchanged various scientific experiments on the outer skin of the ISS and installed a new navigation aid. The return to earth took place on May 14, 2013.

Romanenko was appointed deputy commander of the cosmonaut corps at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center on August 27, 2012 . He continued this job until October 12, 2015, after retiring from active service on November 5, 2014 for medical reasons.

Private

Roman Romanenko is the son of the cosmonaut Juri Romanenko , who undertook three space flights between 1977 and 1987 and spent a total of 430 days in space with his missions to the space stations Salyut 6 and Mir . That meant a world record for several years.

Roman Romanenko is married and has two children.

Since October 14, 2015, he has been a State Duma deputy for the United Russia party from the Amur region .
