List of cities in Russia

Balaschicha ( Russian Балашиха ) is a city in Moscow Oblast in Russia . It is located about 25 km east of the city center and four kilometers from the city limits of Moscow , on the Moskva tributary Pechorka . In 2015 it was merged with the neighboring city of Schelesnodoroschny , with the latter becoming an administrative unit. With a population of 423,946 (as of January 1, 2015), Balashikha is the most populous city in the oblast.

history

The city developed in the 19th century from one of the villages on the notorious road called Vladimirka , which at the time was the only continuous connection from Moscow via Vladimir to Siberia, which was particularly often used for transporting prisoners. The origin of the city name is presumed to be in the word bloschnja , as a medicinal herb that was once found in abundance here was called.

Until the early 19th century the village was called Bloschikha . A fabric factory was founded there for the first time in 1830, which is why this year is considered the city's founding year. In the second half of the century, Balashikha was already an important local center of the textile and paper industry. Accordingly, a workers' settlement grew around the former village. At the same time, the area around the village gained a certain popularity as a dacha area , especially after 1912, when Balaschikha was given a rail link. Famous Russian artists such as Isaak Levitan , Igor Grabar and Vsevolod Meyerhold spent their summers there.

During the Soviet era , Balashikha grew rapidly. In the 1930s in particular, several larger industrial companies were established there, including a. the plant № 120 for aircraft wheels , brake controls and light metal castings and the aircraft repair plant ДОСААФ. In 1939 the place received city rights. During the Second World War , the local factories were temporarily converted to arms production. The city itself was spared from German air raids, but around 9,000 city dwellers lost their lives at the front.

In the post-war period, numerous other industrial companies were founded, including a. the operation for aircraft accessories № 279 (1946) and the cryogenic operating БМЗ (1946). In 1962 a research center for cryogenics was also opened. As a result of incorporations and immigration, Balaschikha grew into a large city in the second half of the 20th century.

The Alexander Nevsky Church, which was closed in the 1930s and demolished under Khrushchev , was rebuilt in 2001.

In December 2014, the Duma of Moscow Oblast decided to merge Balashikha with neighboring Zheleznodorozhny into one city. Resolution № 16/111-P entered into force on January 22, 2015. The former urban area of Schelesnodoroschnys was divided into nine new microrajons from Balashikha.
