Yangzhou ( Chinese 揚州 市 / 扬州 市 , Pinyin Yángzhōu Shì ) is a district-free city in the Chinese province of Jiangsu . It is located on the Yangtze River . Your administrative area has an area of 6,591 km² and almost 4.5 million inhabitants (as of the end of 2010).
Yangzhou is about 70 km from Nanjing . It used to be an important hub for the salt trade . Due to its position directly on the Imperial Canal , it became a very prosperous and powerful trading city in the Middle Ages. With the introduction of the railway lines in China, it lost its importance as an important trading location. Marco Polo (allegedly) spent several years here as governor for the rulers of the Yuan Dynasty .
Today Yangzhou is known nationwide for the three gardens Shouxihu Gongyuan, Ge Yuan and He Yuan . These classical-style gardens from the Tang period attract most tourists from their own country. Outside of China, Yangzhou is very respected in Japan . One of the most important missionaries of the Buddhist faith in Japan was Jianzhen , a monk from Daming Si Monastery not far from the city limits. You can see the Japanese influence on three large pagodas , which are a gift from Japan and reflect the architectural style of Japanese pagodas.
The city was a cultural stronghold from the 10th to the 14th century and many important poets and artists of the time lived and lived in the city. The painting school of the eight eccentrics is well known , of which pictures can be seen in the Yangzhou Museum.
The preserved Islamic graves from the Song era on the banks of the Changjiang are also of cultural and historical importance .
Former President of the People's Republic of China Jiang Zemin was born in Yangzhou in 1926.
Administrative structure
At the district level, Yangzhou is made up of three urban districts, one district and two independent cities (population figures: 2010 census). These are:
- Guangling District (广陵区), 468 km², 341,043 inhabitants, seat of the city government, city center;
- Hanjiang District (邗江区), 553 km², 576,909 inhabitants;
- Jiangdu District (江都 区), 1,330 km², 1,006,372 inhabitants;
- Circle Baoying (宝应县), km² 1461, 752,425 inhabitants, capital: greater community Anyi (安宜镇);
- Yizheng City (仪征 市), 857 km², 564,021 inhabitants;
- City of Gaoyou (高邮 市), 1,922 km², 744,685 inhabitants.
During the 2010 census, the Weiyang District still existed with a population of 474,611. It was disbanded in October 2011.
Sports
Yangzhou Sports Center Gym , which can hold 5,500 people, is located in the city . The Yangzhou Jianzhen Half Marathon has been held since 2006 (named after the monk Jianzhen).
