Vest-Agder (German "West Agder") was the southernmost province ( Fylke ) in Norway that the provinces Rogaland and Aust-Agder ( East-Agder excluded) and part of the country Sørlandet belonged. On January 1, 2019, 187,589 inhabitants inhabited the province. The total area was 7,276  km² (land area 6,679 km²). The administrative seat was Kristiansand . Vest-Agder was the western part of the historical Agder Province . The Agder at that time roughly corresponds to the current Fylke Agder.

Before the reform of 1919, the province was called Lister og Mandals amt and was divided into the two eponymous bailiots.

On January 1, 2020, Vest-Agder merged with Aust-Agder to form the new Fylke Agder. The basis for the merger was a resolution of the Storting on June 8, 2017, which provided for a reduction to eleven areas as part of a regional reform .

Lister (formerly Farsunds Avis ) , the smallest daily newspaper in Norway , was published in Vest-Agder .

religion

Vest-Agder was also called the " buckle on the Norwegian Bible belt ". The proportion of churchgoers who attended church services more than six times a year was 33%, twice as high as the national average.

The Christian People's Party achieved its best results on Sørlandet . In the 2009 Storting election she received over 30 percent in the municipalities of Hægebostad and Audnedal . Many practicing Christians lived in these places, both members of the Lutheran national church and supporters of independent congregations such as the Pentecostal movement . The deaconess Elisabeth Fedde may be mentioned as an example of an important Christian figure who was born in Vest-Agder .

The only Catholic parish with its seat in the province of Vest-Agder was St. Ansgar ( Kristiansand ). Her parish included the entire province except for the municipality of Sirdal , which was assigned to the parish of St. Svithun ( Stavanger ). At parishes belonged to the diocese of Oslo .
