Fylkesstein
Each Norwegian province ( Fylke ) was assigned a typical type of rock , the Fylkesstein . The Fylkessteine should be particularly typical for the province or have a special cultural, economic, artistic or scientific value for it.
The idea was developed by the now-defunct Geology Council in the late 1990s. Selected types of rock were proposed to the provinces, which examined the proposal from a political point of view and finally approved the selection of a stone. The use of the stone and why a certain stone was selected was checked at this level. The selected rock types were presented in 1997 in the newsletter of the Association of Norwegian Amateur Geologists ( Norske Amatørgeologers Sammenslutning , NAGS), each with a short text and a simple photo of a polished handpiece .
