Federico Gonzaga
Federico Gonzaga (* 1540 in Mantua , † February 21, 1565 in Rome ) was the son of Duke Federico II Gonzaga of Mantua and cardinal since 1563 .
Origin and career
His mother was Marghareta von Montferrat (* August 11, 1510, † December 28, 1556), the daughter of Margrave Wilhelm XI. Federico studied at the University of Bologna.
Pope Pius IV elevated him in the consistory of January 6, 1563 to cardinal with the titular church Santa Maria Nuova . As the successor to his uncle Ercole Gonzaga , Federico became Bishop of Mantua in 1563 and his cousin Francesco II Gonzaga succeeded him in office.
After his death, Federico was buried in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Mantua.
