Zhenjiang ( Chinese 鎮江 市 / 镇江 市 , Pinyin Zhènjiāng shì ) is a district-free city in the south-western part of Jiangsu Province in the People's Republic of China . It lies at the point where the Yangtze River cuts the Great Canal . The administrative area of Zhenjiang has an area of 3,799 km² and approx. 3,113,384 inhabitants (end of 2010). Approx. 950,000 people live in the actual urban settlement area of Zhenjiang (2010 census).
Administrative structure
At the county level, Zhenjiang is made up of three urban districts and three independent cities. These are:
- Jingkou district (京口 区), 316 km², 601,671 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
- Runzhou District (润州 区), 132 km², 296,453 inhabitants;
- Dantu district (丹徒 区), 611 km², 360,000 inhabitants;
- Yangzhong City (扬中 市), 332 km², 300,000 inhabitants;
- Danyang City (丹阳 市), 1,023 km², 960,418 inhabitants;
- Jurong City (句容 市), 1,385 km², 617,680 inhabitants.
In the east of the Jingkou district there has been a special economic and technical development zone called Zhenjiang Xinqu (镇江 新区 = "Zhenjiang New Zone") since June 1998 , which is subject to joint administration by the provincial and municipal government. The "New Zone" is approximately 82 km² and has around 80,000 inhabitants. Administratively, it is made up of two street districts and four large municipalities . These are:
- Road quarter Dagang (大港街道);
- Dingmao Street District (丁卯 街道);
- Dagang Municipality (大 港镇);
- Dalu Municipality (大路 镇);
- Greater community Yaoqiao (姚桥镇);
- Big municipality Dinggang (丁岗镇).

history
In the 11th century, the famous Shen Kuo built a mansion here. Zhenjiang was the provincial capital until the beginning of the 20th century . Then the seat was moved to Nanjing to the west . During the Ming and Qing Dynasties , Zhenjiang was an important trading center . Zhenjiang is the birthplace of Li Lanqing . The Jinshan Temple, among other things, is important for tourism.

Zhenjiang's best-known specialty is Zhenjiang vinegar.
