Li Lanqing

Li Lanqing ( Chinese  李嵐清  /  李岚清 , Pinyin Lǐ Lánqīng ; born May 22, 1932 in Zhenjiang , Jiangsu Province , China ) is a Chinese communist politician, former deputy prime minister and former member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China .

Studies and professional activities

After completing his studies at Fudan University in Shanghai , he became an employee of the No. 1 in Changchun, Jilin Province . In September 1952, he also joined the Chinese Communist Party . From 1956 to 1957 he was a trainee at automobile plants such as Gorkowski Avtomobilny Sawod in the Soviet Union . After his return from the USSR in 1957 he became head of the planning department of the No. 1.

Between 1959 and 1981 he was an employee of various state automobile factories, the State Economic Commission and the 1st Ministry of the Mechanical Engineering Industry .

In 1981 he became head of the Government Bonds Office of the State Administrative Commission for Import and Export . Just a year later he became director of the administrative office for foreign investments in the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Foreign Trade. Another year later, in 1983, Li became the deputy mayor of Tianjin .

Minister and Politburo member

Subsequently, he was Deputy Minister for Foreign Economic Relations and Foreign Trade between 1986 and 1990 . As such, he was largely responsible for China's efforts to join the World Trade Organization ( WTO ), which eventually led to its accession in 2001.

In 1987, at the 13th Congress of the CCP, he was elected as a candidate by its Central Committee (CC) . From 1990 to 1992 he was Minister for External Economic Relations and Foreign Trade himself.

At the 14th CPC Congress in 1992, he was elected a member of the Central Committee and the Politburo in 1992. At the same time he was Deputy Director of the State Office for Economy and Trade from 1992 to 1993.

Deputy Prime Minister and promotion to the Politburo Standing Committee

Li became Deputy Prime Minister in 1993. As such, in 1995 he became chairman of the state committee for the award of academic degrees, and in 1998 he was vice chairman of the state steering group for science, technology and education. In addition, he was appointed director of the National Committee for Public Health Campaigns in 1998.

At the 15th Congress of the CCP, he was in 1997 a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and sat down against the favored candidate of the then general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Jiang Zemin , Huang Ju through. This made him a member of the closest leadership of the CCP. He resigned from office at the 16th CCP Congress in 2002. In 2003 he finally resigned from his government offices.
