Ding Shisun

Ding Shisun ( Chinese  丁 石 孙 , Pinyin Dīng Shísūn ; born September 5, 1927 in Zhenjiang , Jiangsu ; † October 12, 2019 in Beijing ) was a Chinese mathematician , university professor and politician of the Democratic League of China , one of the eight democratic parties and groups , and since 1998 Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress .

Life

University professor and scientific commitment

Ding Shisun studied mathematics at Tsinghua University after attending school and graduated in 1950. He then became a lecturer at Peking University and joined the Chinese Democratic League in 1952. He later took on a professorship for mathematics at Peking University and was at times also vice director and director of the university's mathematics faculty and, between 1984 and 1988, president of Peking University.

He was also active as Vice President of the Chinese Mathematical Society and President of the Mathematical Society of Beijing. He was also a member of the Examination Board of the State Committee for Academic Degrees and Vice President of the China Society for International Educational Exchange. He was also the deputy head of the National Science Foundation's Mathematical Examination and Assessment Group , a member of the Executive Council of the Chinese Association for Overseas Exchange and the Executive Council of the China Society for Higher Education. On the other hand, he worked temporarily as a member of the Council of the People's Institute for Foreign Policy, chairman of the foundation committee for the Jiang Zehan scholarship and vice chairman of the committee of the Zhou Peiyuan Foundation.

Among other things, he wrote two mathematical textbooks titled Concise Textbook of Higher Algebra and Analytic Geometry and Orders of Linear Displacement Register .

Ding Shisun received an honorary doctorate from Sōka University in Japan in 1985 .

Political career

Ding Shisun, who was a member of the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Chinese Democratic League, was vice chairman of the Party's Central Committee from 1988 to 1996.

In 1988 he first became a member of the National Committee of the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People and was then from 1993 to 1998 a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of this body.

In November 1996, he succeeded Fei Xiaotong as chairman of the Central Committee of the Chinese Democratic League and thus chairman of that party. In addition, since 1998 he has been vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, a 150-member body of the National People's Congress that carries out the work of the people's representation between the planning meetings.

Ding Shisun, who also became president of the Western Returned Students Association in 1999, was also a member of the 1999 Committee to Prepare for the Acquisition of Macau as a Special Administrative Region . In December 2005 he resigned the post of chairman of the Democratic League and was then its honorary chairman.
