The Democratic League of China ( Chinese  中國 民主 同盟  /  中国 民主 同盟 , Pinyin Zhōngguó Mínzhǔ Tóngméng ) is one of the so-called " Eight Democratic Parties and Groups " of the People's Republic of China in the wake of the Communist Party of China .

history

The Chinese Democratic League emerged from an alliance of parties and political associations that belonged neither to the ruling Kuomintang nor to the Chinese Communist Party . It was formally established in 1941 and took its current name in 1944 in Chongqing , which at that time served as the provisional capital of the Republic of China during the Japanese invasion. From January 1945 she took the position that the government should be supported and a coalition government should be formed from all parties. The more the Democratic League distanced itself from the Kuomintang, the closer its relationship with the Communist Party became. This tendency led to a break with conservative circles who left the league. When the government tried to convene a national constituent assembly and hold elections, the Democratic League boycotted the plan. Part of the Social Democrats left the alliance and joined the government, while the Democratic League joined the CP. This led to the alliance being banned and its members being prosecuted. With the victory of the Communist Party of China in the civil war and the proclamation of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the Democratic League became one of the " eight democratic parties and groups " tolerated by communist rule. Between 1950 and 1978, the Chinese Democratic League submitted to the Communist Party leadership completely, but numerous members and officials were victims of political persecution.

ideology

The party statutes of the Democratic League of China profess the political leadership of the CCP and loyalty to the political direction of the current CCP chairman. The league aims to renew the country through science and education. In allegiance to the CP, the party is not an opposition.

Organization and membership

The party is similar in structure to the Chinese Communist Party . The organizational principle of the Democratic League is consequently democratic centralism . The highest party organ is the National Congress. The members are obliged to obey the party leadership. Double membership in other parties is possible.
