Iksan ( 익산시 ) is a city in Jeollabuk-do Province in South Korea . The city has more than 300,000 inhabitants.

history

In the 7th century Iksan was next to Sabi, today's Buyeo-eup , the second capital of the Kingdom of Baekje . The city was called Iri until 1995, when it was merged with Iksan County to form Iksan City.

On November 11, 1977 , a freight car carrying 40  tons of dynamite exploded in Iri station . 59 people died, 185 were seriously, and a total of 1,300 injured. Most of the buildings within 500 m of the detonation point were badly damaged. A total of around 9,500 buildings were affected. 10,000 people were left homeless. The damage from the loss of housing alone amounted to 23 billion won . The city's first apartment buildings were built to accommodate the homeless.

Culture

The Ten Million Chrysanthemum Festival takes place annually in late autumn . In 2002 the Jewelery Museum was opened.
