Gimje ( kor .: 김제시 , Gimje-si ) is a city in Jeollabuk-do Province in South Korea . The city had an area of ​​545.19 km² and a population of 85,924 people in 2019. From the ancient Kingdom of Baekje to the 21st century, Gimje was one of the best areas for growing rice .

history

The area of ​​the city lies in the great plains of Korea and has been cultivated since ancient times. Early states rose in 200. The Kingdom of Baekje invaded and annexed several small states in the 13th year of King Onjo's reign . The Kingdom of Baekje changed its name to Byeogol, but it is not clear when.

The Kingdom of Baekje was later destroyed by the Kingdoms of Tang and Silla, and the United Kingdom of Silla changed the city's name to Gimje.

In the Joseon Dynasty , Gimje first appeared in 1466 when Sejo ruled Joseon. He promoted Gimje to an independent county. In 1628, King Gwanghaegun combined the nearby Mangyeong District with Gimje to form Gimje District.
