location

Mytishchi is located on the northeastern outskirts of Moscow on the Jausa River , 19 km from the center of Moscow. South of the city extends the forest area of the Lossiny Ostrov National Park , on which the border between Mytishchi and Moscow runs along the MKAD motorway ring .

Besides Moscow, the city of Korolev borders on Mytishchi. The cities of Pushkino , Dolgoprudny , Ivantejewka and Shcholkowo also belong to the metropolitan area around Mytishchi .

history

Monument to the first Russian aqueduct in Mytishchi

The city emerged from a customs post on the way to Sergiev Posad , which was mentioned for the first time in 1460. According to tradition, the city owes its current name to the fact that tolls (Old Russian: myt ) were levied in this area of the road .

Mytishchi was first mentioned as an independent village from the 17th century at the latest. This was able to develop economically over the centuries, mainly thanks to its location on the important road that connected Moscow with the Trinity Monastery of Sergiev Posad and further with Yaroslavl . In the middle of the 19th century the place had almost 1000 inhabitants.

Mytishchi gained additional importance with the construction of the first Russian aqueduct at the end of the 18th century, which fed drinking water from the surrounding springs to Moscow. This line supplied Moscow with water until the 20th century. In 1862 one of the first Russian railway lines was laid through Mytishchi with the route from Moscow to Sergiev Posad . With the establishment of cotton mills at the end of the 19th century, industrialization of the city began, which reached its climax with the establishment of the wagon factory (today: Metrowagonmasch ) by the industrialist Sawwa Mamontow . At the same time, the area around Mytishchi became popular as a dacha suburb of Moscow , also thanks to the numerous forests here .

In 1925, Mytishchi, now a large workers' settlement of the wagon factory with over 20,000 inhabitants, received city status. Today's cityscape is mainly determined by residential areas from the post-war period, which extend far beyond the territory of the former village.
