The town with 9,705 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) is located on the Ossjotr , a right tributary of the Oka , around 160 km from Moscow , and is the administrative center of the raion of the same name within the oblast.

history

St. Nicholas Church in Serebrjanyje Prudy

Prudy, south of Moscow, was first mentioned in the early 1570s. At that time the place was close to the southern borders of the Grand Duchy of Moscow and was therefore often invaded by Tatars . For this reason, the village served as a fortress for a while, but lost its importance again until the 17th century when the borders of Russia could be moved further south.

In 1898 the railway line Moscow Paveletsky Railway Station - Bogoyavlensk was passed by Serebrjanyje Prudy and a station was opened there. On June 20, 1924, the place became the administrative seat of a Rajons. From September 26, 1937, the Rajon belonged to Tula Oblast , before it came to Moscow Oblast on December 20, 1942.

During the Second World War , the advance of the German Wehrmacht was stopped at Serebrjanyje Prudy as part of the Battle of Moscow . It was only able to keep the place occupied for a few days until it was retaken by the Red Army on December 7, 1941.

Since April 20, 1961, the place has had the status of an urban-type settlement.

Serebrjanyje Prudy has a train station on the line. The most important road connection is the nearby federal trunk road R22 Kaspi (formerly M6).
