Zvyozdny gorodok ( Russian Звёздный Городок , German Star City , in some publications Star City , English Star City ; official name until 2009 Закрытый военный городок № 1 , Sakryty wojenny gorodok 1 , German Closed military town no. 1 ) is a closed urban-type settlement in the Near the city of Shcholkovo northeast of Moscow in Moscow Oblast in Russia . The place has 6332 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
In zvyozdny gorodok is the training center of the Russian (and formerly Soviet ) cosmonaut , the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center ( Центр Подготовки Космонавтов имени Ю. А. Гагарина , transliteration : Central Podgotowki Kosmonawtow imeni Ju A. Gagarina. , Abbr. ЦПК / ZPK ). Since the 1960s, all cosmonauts have been here on their flights into space, e.g. B. to the space station ISS prepared. The cosmonaut training center has the world's largest centrifuge , which was built in 1980 and when used at 36 revolutions per minute, up to 12 g can act on the driver.
There is also a water basin (12 m deep, 20 m wide) on the training site, in which repairs can be practiced in weightlessness using a model . To simulate technical failures, a (dry) 1: 1 model of a part of the MIR was previously available , which now only serves as an exhibit.
During the time of the Soviet Union, the “star city” was strictly shielded from the outside world. Even today it is surrounded by a wall and bordered by a forest. The only way into the city center is past military controls. Admission is usually only possible with a pass, which only residents or registered guests have.
Many cosmonauts and their families live in Svyosdny Gorodok. Several lakes have been artificially created on the site. There is also a supermarket and a school that has a partnership with the Friedrich-August-Genth-Gesamtschule in Wächtersbach (Hesse).
Information and images have reached the public since the opening, particularly through space tourism .
Svyosdny Gorodok has a larger airport ( Tschkalowski military airfield ).
