Mansion

Gorky is best known for the fact that revolutionary leader Lenin died there on January 21, 1924. In the last years of his life he had lived in a former manor house, which was built on the estate there - then known as Wyschnije Gorki - in the early 19th century for the noble Durasov family together with an old classical park ensemble. In the 1910s, the complex passed into the ownership of the Moscow mayor Reinbot and was rebuilt, with the renowned architect Fyodor Schechtel being among others responsible for participating in the renovation project. After the October Revolution , the property was confiscated by the Bolsheviks and since 1918 Lenin has used it as a suburban residence. After his resignation from political activities due to illness, Lenin stayed permanently in Gorky for the last months of his life.

In 1949 the mansion and its ensemble were converted into a museum in memory of Lenin's last years. It is still operated today by the Russian Ministry of Culture as the Lenin Museum and offers group tours on request.

About four kilometers from Gorky is the Leninskaya train station on the route from Moscow ( Paveletsky train station ) via Domodedovo to Kaschira .
