history
The city, which has existed since the 14th century, was expanded into a fortress in the 16th century to protect Moscow from the south. Even while standing on the Ugra , the city was the base of the army of the Grand Duchy of Moscow under Grand Prince Ivan III. been. After the Russian Empire grew southwards, it developed into a trading town and religious center, thanks in part to the two monasteries in its vicinity: the Vladichny and Vysotsky monasteries . The textile industry arrived in the 19th century. In the time of the Soviet Union , the industry was expanded, which today includes, among other things, mechanical engineering (e.g. the temporary car manufacturer SeAZ ), furniture and clothing manufacture.
