Stepan Mikhailovich Levitsky
Stepan Levitsky ( Russian Степан Михайлович Левитский , scientific. Transliteration Stepan Mihajlovic Levitskij * April 13 jul. / 25. April 1876 greg. In Zadonsk , Voronezh Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 21st March 1924 in Nizhne-Turinsk ) was a Russian chess player .
He took part in several All-Russian national championships . In 1899 he came third after Michail Chigorin and Emanuel Schiffers , in 1903 in Kiev he came 8th with 10.5 points from 18 games.
He played competitions against Simon Alapin and Alexander Alekhine , which he lost both: 1907 in Saint Petersburg against Alapin with 0-5, in 1913 in the same place against Alekhine with 3-7.
Levitsky played aggressive chess but was barely familiar with opening theory. Against Akiba Rubinstein in Vilnius in 1912 he tried the move sequence, later referred to as the Hodgson attack , 1. d4 d5 2. Bg5 and after 2.… c6 3. Nc3 Bf5 4. Qd2 Nd7 5. f3 Ngf6 6. e4 dxe4 7. Qf4 Qa5 8. 0–0–0 exf3 9. d5 strong attack, but the game ended in a draw .
He went down in chess history as the loser in a game against Frank James Marshall in Breslau in 1912, in which Marshall won with one of the most spectacular moves in chess history.
His best historical rating was 2603 in January 1913.
