The Weißer Turm underground station (abbreviation: WT ) is the 14th  underground station of the Nuremberg underground and was opened on January 28, 1978. The station is served by the U1 line and was its end point until September 20, 1980. It is 445 meters from the Plärrer underground station and 635 meters from the Lorenzkirche underground station . An x-shaped double track change connects to the station in the direction of Fürth. The underground station is named after the gate tower of the penultimate Nuremberg city fortifications , under which it is located. It is used by around 20,100 passengers every day.

location

The station is located in the St. Lorenz district of Nuremberg and extends underground in an east-west direction from the White Tower under Jakobsplatz to Ludwigstrasse. From the two platform heads, exits lead to a distribution floor and from there to Jakobsplatz and the pedestrian zones Breite Gasse and Karolinenstraße. An elevator leads from the eastern platform head to the surface. On the eastern distribution floor there is access to the C&A department store and the Wöhrl fashion store, as well as a kiosk and a public toilet .

In the vicinity of the train station are the Elisabeth and Jakobskirche , the Police Headquarters Middle Franconia and in front of the White Tower the marriage carousel , which hides a ventilation shaft of the subway.

Building and architecture

The station structure is 150 m long, between 16 and 22 m wide and 16 m deep (one and a half times the depth). Construction work on the station began on May 26, 1975. The eastern section of the station under the White Tower was built using the cut-and-cover method, the 4500 t tower was placed on a concrete table with 30 piles and then on the station tunnel during construction. The western part was built using an open construction method with Berlin sheeting and diaphragm walls in order to protect the churches of St. Elisabeth and St. Jakob near the train station from damage. During the surface restoration , the barbican in front of the tower , which was damaged in the Second World War and partly demolished in 1953 when the tram tracks were laid, was rebuilt.

The color of the station is green . The platform walls are clad with sandstones and are intended to draw attention to the penultimate city fortifications, which included the White Tower. With their green tiling, the columns represent the 1970s modernism.
