Location and infrastructure

General plan of subway station. Central station (Nuremberg)

The U1 station extends underground in a south-north direction from the central hall of the station building to Frauentorgraben. At the north end it is crossed at right angles by the U2 station, which runs in a west-east direction from Bahnhofsplatz to the Bahnhofstrasse / Gleisbühlstrasse intersection. It is a so-called crossing station and has a total of five levels.

The track area of Nuremberg Central Station forms level +1, the station forecourt and the traffic island in front of the station building forms level 0. Level −1 is divided into the Königstorpassage with shops and a continuous distribution floor with exits to the city moat , to the tram island, to the crossing at Königstraße / Königstorgraben, Bahnhof- / Gleisbühlstraße, to the Celtis underpass, to the central hall of the train station and the entrances to the subway. There are also operating rooms, a substation and the customer center of Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg on this level. The platforms for the U2 / U3 lines are located on level −2 (U2 level) and those for the U1 line are located on level −3 (U1 level). The station has a total of three elevators : one elevator connects the surface, the distribution floor and the U2 level, another the distribution floor with the U2 and U1 levels, and the third the central hall with the distribution floor.

On the U2 level, there is a parking and sweeping system next to the train station in the direction of Röthenbach .

Building and architecture

Platform level −2 (U2 / U3)
Platform level −3 (U1)

The station building consists of the distribution level and the platform levels of the U1 and U2 and is 18 m deep. The U1 level is 145 m long and 27 m wide, the U2 level 167 m long and a maximum of 25 m wide.

In the first construction phase, which began on March 25, 1974, the U1 level and the 62 m long section of the crossing U2 level were created. The northern section of the station under the station square was built using the open construction method with Berlin shoring , the southern section of the station under the central hall of the main station using the open construction method with diaphragm walls . The central hall above the excavation was demolished during the construction work and the facade, which weighs 2600 t, was placed on stilts. The second construction phase began on July 14, 1986 and included the construction of the U2 level. This 105 m long station structure was built using the open construction method with Berlin shoring. In the area of the post office building, a detached bored pile wall had to be erected and the cover construction had to be used, since the building reaches 5 m from the underground tunnel.

As with all transfer stations in the network, the color of the station is orange in combination with white . To make the vehicle dynamics clear, the platform walls on both underground levels have an arrow pattern. On the U1 level, the white arrow thickness decreases in the direction of travel and the orange arrow thickness increases; on the U2 level, the arrows only show the direction of travel on the platform. On the distribution floor there is a 14 m² relief of the old town of Nuremberg made by the artist Alfred Kuch based on a template by the graphic artist Heinz Schillinger.
