The Südfriedhof is a cemetery in Nuremberg .

location

The Südfriedhof is located in the districts of Gartenstadt and Falkenheim . It extends west of Julius-Loßmann-Strasse and north of Trierer Strasse. In the north it is bounded by the marshalling yard .

history

In 1899 the creation of a second municipal cemetery after the Westfriedhof was suggested. In part of the forest area incorporated into Nuremberg in 1905, the south cemetery was laid out based on the model of the Munich forest cemetery. It opened on September 1, 1913. The park character of the south cemetery was preserved more clearly than at the west cemetery, which is more closely occupied. After the First World War , the Ehrenfriedhof was incorporated. The south cemetery was expanded several times in the following years and is the largest cemetery in Nuremberg.

There are a total of ten grave fields with their own memorials and memorials to the victims of the two world wars on the extensive, park-like grounds of the southern cemetery. These also include collective and mass graves with up to 3500 people buried together.

The cemetery has also had an Islamic part for several years . a. all graves are oriented towards Mecca and are otherwise open to all ethnicities and citizens of the world to rest.

There are no regional or ethical obligations in Nuremberg , e.g. to prefer or avoid the south, west , east , Johannis , Rochus or one of the other cemeteries from certain districts .

In the southern part of the cemetery, near the war graves and the graves of those who were killed in the devastating bombing of January 2, 1945, there are two towers made of sandstone blocks ( supposedly from the destroyed synagogue in Nuremberg ) . At the foot of the north tower you can read:

" ERECTED 1957-58 "

On the south tower you can read:

" AS A WARNING AND IN MEMORY OF 6621 MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN, VICTIMS OF THE BOMB WAR AND THE BATTLES AT HOME IN THE YEARS 1941–1945 "

Three bells were hung on wooden yokes between the two towers.

On December 12, 2019, at 4:30 a.m., a woman broke through the wrought-iron entrance gate in an SUV and damaged numerous graves in the Islamic part of the cemetery on an odyssey.
