Airport metro station
The airport subway station (abbreviation: FL ) was opened as the 39th subway station of the Nuremberg subway on November 27, 1999, making Nuremberg the only city in Germany since the closure of Tempelhof Airport in Berlin whose airport with the U -Bahn can be reached. It is 2388 m from the Ziegelstein underground station and is the terminus of the U2 line. The distance between the Ziegelstein and Flughafen subway stations is the largest in the Nuremberg subway network. It is used by around 7,200 passengers every day.
Location and infrastructure
The station extends in an east-west direction north of Flughafenstrasse in front of the airport terminal building . It has three direct entrances to the surface, which are located at Terminals Departures 1 and 2 and Arrivals. An elevator at each platform head connects the platform level with the surface. The underground station has no turning tracks, so you have to turn around briefly at the platform .
Building and architecture
The station structure is 230 m long, 15 m wide and 9 m deep (simple depth). The construction work for this began on September 2, 1996 and was carried out in the open construction method with Berlin shoring . Access to the terminals was maintained with auxiliary bridges over the station structure.
The station design is based on the terminal and is characterized by the use of aluminum and steel elements. A four-part mosaic of a plane taking off or landing , designed by the Nuremberg artist Toni Burghart , is attached to each platform wall .
There are five large, rectangular openings in the station ceiling that allow daylight to fall onto the platform. The entire area above the underground station is spanned by an approx. 5000 m² glass roof.
