The Nuremberg NightLiner network (including lines to Fürth , Erlangen , Schwabach , Fürth district and Nürnberger Land )

The NightLiner is a night bus network introduced in 1998 , which originally only covered the Nuremberg urban area with twelve lines , but now also includes the neighboring cities of Fürth , Erlangen and Schwabach , as well as the Fürth district and large parts of the Nürnberger Land district with 28 lines . The network is operated by Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg (VAG) in partnership with Erlanger Stadtwerke Stadtverkehr GmbH (ESTW), infra fürth verkehr gmbh (infra) and Omnibusverkehr Franken (OVF).

The network structure is now based on 14 lines starting every full hour from Nuremberg Central Station in all directions, which open up the old and inner city areas and lead to the outskirts of Nuremberg or to neighboring communities or cities. At various transfer points in the network, there is also a connection guarantee to 14 further lines in the Fürth, Erlangen city area or the surrounding area.

Routes

The lines in the Nuremberg and Fürth urban areas often show great parallels to the underground and tram networks. For example, the N1 line operates largely on the U2 northern line , while the N7 serves the U2 southern line . Because many lines do not go directly to the terminus, but sometimes connect disco and event areas within walking distance, night operation of the underground or tram, far away from the presumably low occupancy, was never considered. The concept of line extensions to the outskirts and the surrounding area could only be implemented in this way through transfer situations or additional direct trips.

Timetable and tariff

Regular operation

The Nightliners run on the nights before Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays , as well as on certain bridge days from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m., so that they operate on around 120 days a year. The tariff is included in the daily tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN), so that additional tickets do not have to be purchased.

Special operation

On New Year's Eve , the lines departing from Nuremberg Central Station run every 20 minutes, the Erlanger and Fürth lines every 30 minutes and all other lines regularly every 60 minutes. In addition, all three subway lines run around the clock every 10 minutes. During the Blue Night , in addition to an increased number of nightliners, the underground trains also run until 2:30 a.m.

Discussion about expansion

Two CSU members in 2014 and two SPD members of the City Council in 2015 aimed to expand operations to include normal weekdays, especially Thursday . In view of the significantly lower demand compared to the weekends and the associated economic expenses, which would have to be subsidized to a considerable extent , the requests were rejected by the VAG.

Integration of the S-Bahn network

In December 2019 it was announced that from the 2022 timetable change, in addition to the buses, the S-Bahn lines to Erlangen and Hersbruck (S1), to Roth (S2), to Neumarkt (S3), to Ansbach (S4) and to Neustadt ( S6) should run at night.

history

Network development
Panorama of the central transfer point at the main train station

1998: The beginnings of the network

The introduction of a night bus service goes back to an initiative of the municipal voter group Die Guten in 1997. The VAG implemented the concept just one year later . The first nightliners went into operation on February 1st, 1998 at 1:00 a.m. Twelve lines drove from now on in the nights before Sams -, Sundays - and holidays 1:00 to 4:00 every hour from Nuremberg Central from in all directions part of Nuremberg, and one each line closed Fürth (N9), Erlangen ( N10) and Zirndorf (N8). The starting network comprised around 230 kilometers and around 300 stops.

As early as December 6, 1998, a 13th line (N60) operated by the OVF was introduced, which connected the N4 stop Langwasser Mitte with the N6 terminus Kornburg . On May 3, 1999, the 14th line (N61) went into operation and since then has connected the N6 stop Koppenhof with Schwabach , and the N7 line to Stein was extended.

1999: Night bus routes for the city and district of Fürth

With the extension of the N9 line to Burgfarrnbach and the commissioning of the N17 and N20 lines to Atzenhof or to the N10 terminus in Erlangen Hugenottenplatz , infra also started night bus operations. The central Fürth transfer point is the Fürth Rathaus station . Since October 1, 2000, the OVF lines N21 (with the option to change to the N8 in Zirndorf) and N22 have also connected Cadolzburg and Veitsbronn in the Fürth district from here . On January 1, 2002, the N18 line to Oberfürberg , which was already known on New Year's Eve , went into operation and, after two years of successful trial operation, was permanently added to the line network.

2001: Erlanger night bus goes into operation

The CBI joined on 1 January 2001 the Nightliner outlet and operate since the three lines N27, N28 and N29, the most Hugenottenplatz access to the lines N10 and N20 to Nuremberg Central and Fuerth Rathaus own and link the Erlanger suburbs. Also with the introduction of the N18 line in Fürth, the N28 line was extended on January 1, 2002 to Buckenhof in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district .

2004: Expansion into the district of Nürnberger Land

Interior view of a NightLiner on the Plärrer

Since January 1, 2004, a 13th line (N15) starting from Nuremberg Central Station has been connecting Feucht , Schwarzenbruck and Burgthann to Nuremberg city center. In Feucht there is a connection to the newly introduced line N55, which runs from here via Winkelhaid and Altdorf to Hagenhausen . At the same time, an AST line N59 was introduced from the N15 stop Ochenbruck via Altenthann and Winkelhaid to Ungelstetten , and the N2 line was extended via Lauf to Speikern .

In connection with a redesign of the traffic to Lauf north and south of the Pegnitz, a new line N13, which is the 14th line starting from Nuremberg Central Station, was introduced in December 2008. The new line runs on the former N2 route from the main station via Rathenauplatz to Thummenberger Weg and from here continues on the northern Pegnitz side via Erlenstegen and Behringersdorf after crossing the Peqnitz to Schwaig , where there is a connection to the N2 line. It also connects to Röthenbach an der Pegnitz on the southern side of the Pegnitz and has the option to change to the N2 line again in Lauf . From Lauf the line N13 leads back on the northern side of the river via Neunkirchen am Sand and Schnaittach to Simmelsdorf -Hüttenbach . As part of this restructuring, the N2 line was given a new route and has since run from the main train station parallel to the tram route in the direction of Tiergarten to Mögeldorf . From here it leads via Laufamholz to Schwaig , crosses the Pegnitz and continues via Behringersdorf and Rückersdorf north of the Pegnitz to Lauf. Alternating the river side several times, it also connects Ottensoos , Reichenschwand and Hersbruck . In addition, the N3 line was extended from Erhardstrasse to Heinemannbrücke .

2016: Full involvement of the Fürth district

On December 11, 2016, a major restructuring of the network in the Fürth district took place. In addition to the introduction of the N23 line, which runs in a ring from the Fürth town hall via Obermichelbach Tuchenbach and Puschendorf to Veitsbronn and back to the center of Fürth, another N24 ring line has been introduced in Zirndorf and Oberasbach . Starting from the Zirndorf train station, it connects Ammerndorf and Buttendorf with Roßtal and leads back to Zirndorf via Unter- and Oberasbach . At the same time, line N8 was extended from Zirndorf station via Wintersdorf and Bronnamberg . Since then, the N7 line has also been running from Stein via Großwaismannsdorf Roßtal Buttendorf and Ammerndorf to Großhabersdorf and via Raitersaich and Buchschwabach back to Großwaismannsdorf . As a result of the associated takeover of many stops on the N21 lines, it has been running from Cadolzburg via Egersdorf and Wachendorf back to Zirndorf and Fürth . With the restructuring of the network, all municipalities in the Fürth district have since been served by a nightliner line.
